Built with adidas’ record-breaking Lightstrike Pro midsole foam, a rocker shape and a new one-way stretch upper, the latest version of adidas’ racing supershoe is designed purely for performance.

With several of our reviewers training for big fall races, we put the Adios Pro 4 to the test during tough speed sessions on some tired legs. Can adidas’ latest creation stand up to our current PRs? Read on to find out.

At the heart of the adidas Adizero franchise is adidas’ Lightstrike Pro foam, and the Adios Pro 4 is no exception. Lightstrike Pro foam is adidas’ lightest and most responsive midsole foam yet, but that’s not the only reason you’ll be bouncing off the road in the Pro 4.

Sandwiched in between two layers of Lightstrike Pro foam is a web of carbon rods that closely mimic the shape of your feet’s metatarsals. Adidas calls this their ENERGYRODS technology, and it functions in the same way as a traditional carbon-fiber plate–compressing and expanding the midsole foam more quickly, sending energy back up to you to propel you forward with each stride.

“My first run in the Adios Pro 4 shoes was tough,” says Kate, who’s right in the thick of marathon training. “I had a 10-mile speed workout with ten sets of 3 minutes getting down to 10K pace. It was an unusually hot and humid morning and I wasn’t feeling great. The shoes were a helpful tool to keep me going on a day when I really would have liked to quit. They’re lightweight, bouncy and propulsive, but also feel really natural to run in. I’m afraid to know what my pace would have been like in a different shoe!”

Brandon agrees with Kate’s evaluation of the ride, but expressed some concerns about the shoe’s stability.

“I tested the Adios Pro 4 on the roads during some faster workouts and I noticed a few things right off the bat,” he says. “The shoe is soft, bouncy and lightweight, but it’s a bit unstable around the heel and midfoot. With the 39-millimeter stack height in the heel, I feel very high off the ground while the base of the shoe is pretty narrow.”

Only two of our reviewers got to test this exclusive shoe, so we don’t have a third person to be the tie-breaker regarding the shoe’s stability, or lack thereof.

The last thing you want to worry about while running at top speed is your shoes–specifically, the fit. A midfoot sloshing around inside or a heel trying to break away out the backside can really put a damper on your PR-pursuit.

Kate and Brandon both enjoyed the snug, secure fit of the Adios Pro 4. It’s worth noting that we were only able to acquire sample sizes of this shoe–a women’s size 7 and a men’s size 9. Kate typically wears a 7.5, but has struggled with the sizing in other adidas models like the Boston and the previous Adios Pro. Those shoes ran big on her, and the 7 ended up fitting perfectly.

“Adidas shoes always fit larger than expected for me, but I finally got the right size!” she says. “It’s obvious that these shoes are made for speed with their thin, lightweight upper and super bouncy foam. It definitely feels like a race fit, with just enough space in the toe box but no extra. The heel collar is lightly padded without any extra weight added. The tongue is paper-thin and sueded—just right for a race shoe. When I first tried these on, I could feel the presence of the heel collar touching my achilles. It made me nervous, but I ran with crew socks on and it was fine. I didn’t have any trouble.”

Brandon received a size 9, which is half a size larger than he usually wears.

“While the shoe is a little long on me, the fit is actually very dialed in,” he says. “The upper is comfortable, thin, and lightweight. It’s pretty stretchy and accommodating. I had no issues with the lockdown and the heel collar felt snug.”

The lockdown fit can partly be attributed to adidas’ new LIGHTLOCK upper, a woven mesh material with one-way stretch and internal bands on the inside to lock your feet securely into place. While we don't recommend going up a half size like Brandon did, it's reassuring to know that the upper still held him in securely. And if you’re typically in between sizes, like Kate, it’s a good idea to go a half-size down in the Adios Pro 4.

The key differences between the Adios Pro 4 and its predecessor are the new LIGHTLOCK upper mentioned above, an adjustment of the rocker shape and a new outsole material.

The rocker shape in the Pro 4 has been moved back towards the heel, a decision adidas says was influenced by the Evo 1 (you know, the shoe that broke the women’s marathon record at the 2023 Berlin Marathon). Adidas claims this placement has been lab tested and proven to “trigger forward momentum and improve running economy.”

“When running in the Pro 4, I felt a much more aggressive toe-off sensation than I usually do in other race day options,” says Brandon.

Save for a small amount of adidas’ signature Continental rubber beneath your big toe, adidas designers have replaced the outsole with their new LIGHTTRAXION material. I have to imagine that, based on the name, this new material is quite a bit lighter. The men’s version has lost over an ounce of weight from the previous model and the women’s model is lighter than other comparable models (which we’ll get to below). The Pro 3 was only offered in unisex sizing, so we can’t compare the women’s weights.

We took a look at some comparable models to see how they stack up against the Adios Pro 4. Here’s what we found.

All three shoes also offer maximum stack heights and aggressive rocker shapes to assist with toe-offs, further enhancing your efficiency. Your shoe of choice will likely come down to details like the feel of the foam, the placement of the rocker, slight differences between the heel-to-toe drops and, of course, the fit.

Our male reviewers found the three models to fit mostly true to size. For some of our female reviewers, the Cielo X1 and the Adios Pro 4 ran big. If you’re typically in between sizes, it’s worth trying these two models in store at your local Cheap Novogas Jordan Outlet.

For runners looking to chase their fastest times yet, the Adios Pro 4 can be your secret race-day weapon. Runners who prioritize weight savings will be hard pressed to find a lighter racing shoe.

“I love the propulsive underfoot feel of the Pro 4,” says Kate. “I’d recommend these shoes for long races like a half or full marathon. It’s got thick, bouncy foam that will save your legs for the long haul.”

Keep in mind that the Adios Pro 4, just like most racing shoes, doesn’t have a removable sockliner. That means that if you typically wear insoles like Currex or Superfeet, it won’t fit in this shoe. Some runners can go without their insoles on race day, but it’s always a good idea to test out your racing shoes on a long run prior to the race–remember, nothing new on race day!
