Both the Nimbus 27 and the Novablast 5 both sport lightweight, breathable uppers. Based on the tech sheets provided by ASICS, both shoes are made with jacuard mesh uppers.
Reviewers found both shoes to be breathable and comfortable.
“The Novablast 5 shoes felt as if I was wearing slippers, the upper is so soft and wrapped my feet in a hug,” Mandy says. “While I did have to reposition the tongue after I slipped the shoes on, it was easy to adjust and stayed put throughout my walks and runs.”
“All the details of the Nimbus 27 are thoughtfully designed for comfort, from the padded ankle collar to the thin, stretchy tongue. A pillowy tongue would have been too much for this shoe,” says Kate. “The fit is true to size with a toe box that’s roomy, but not too roomy. The midfoot has a nice lockdown and the laces are long enough to tie a marathon loop for extra security, but not so long you’ll trip over them.”
While both shoes have similar upper materials and thin, stretchy tongues, the Nimbus 27 feels like it simply has more. A pillow-y soft pad of silky cushioning wraps around your heel and ankle, making it nearly impossible to experience any pesky slippage.
I enjoyed the fit of both shoes, but I found the Nimbus to feel a bit heavier due to the additional materials around the heel and ankle.

ASICS GEL-Nimbus versus ASICS Novablast: Ride & Performance
Until recently, the Nimbus and Novablast used the same midsole foams. Now the Nimbus 27 uses the same FF BLAST PLUS ECO foam as the previous version, while the Novablast 5 has switched to a brand-new FF BLAST MAX foam.
The Nimbus combines the FF BLAST PLUS ECO cushioning with an internal PUREGEL compound, which is the same GEL you’ve come to know and love from ASICS now hidden from view deep within the midsole. The combination is a plush, dreamy ride that’s perfect for recovery runs, long runs or just long days on your feet.
The Nimbus 27 feels soft and cushy, but firm enough to provide a solid platform to push off from. I never felt like my feet were sinking into the shoe and I had to dig myself out of the cushioning. While the shoes have a high stack height (42 millimeters in the heel, which means they’re some of the tallest shoes I’ve ever run in), I never felt like I was too high off the ground or wobbly in any way. My strides felt very natural and for some of the run I forgot I was wear-testing and just became one with the shoes–oops!
While the Nimbus feels soft and cloud-like, the Novablast 5 is its springier, peppier counterpart. The Novablast 5 uses what ASICS calls a “trampoline-inspired design,” which is a rounded section of springy foam placed under the forefoot, helping you move forward as you’re in the toe-off phase.
“The new FF BLAST MAX cushioning gave me the perfect combination of bounce and cushion while remaining lightweight," says Mandy. "As a self-proclaimed lover of bouncy foam underfoot, this shoe is right up my alley. I’ve only done short, easy runs in this shoe while I recover from the Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock 50K, but I know that it’ll be in my rotation for a long time.”

The Nimbus and the Novablast use different outsole materials for traction and durability. I found the Nimbus to be more durable over my training cycles compared to the Novablast, which isn’t surprising considering the weight difference between the shoes. The Novablast is quite a bit lighter, and typically running shoe manufacturers will use less rubber coverage on the outsole as a way to save weight.
ASICS GEL-Nimbus versus ASICS Novablast: Which is best for me?

The Nimbus will be best for runners who prefer a soft feel with luxurious cushioning and padding from top to bottom. It’s a little bit heavier than the Novablast and a bit more durable. I found the Nimbus to be perfect for long runs and recovery runs when my legs and feet are feeling beat up and in need of some extra TLC.
The Novablast is great for those who love high energy return to put an extra pep in their step. It’s lightweight, too, so you can truly run with nothing holding you back. I found myself reaching for the Novablast 5 for uptempo runs, like practicing goal marathon pace or running with my faster friends.
