Inspired by traditional Japanese sashiko (“little stabs”), a form of decorative reinforcement, Australian boutique Up There is ready to take its Saucony Grid 8000 ‘Sashiko’ global.
According to the boutique, Up There collaborated with Saucony to create a product that would endure, and to do so, the brands employed a tried-and-true marat: sashiko. A form of reinforcement stitching from Japan, it has historically been used to reinforce wear or repair tears with patches in order to extend a garment’s lifespan.
However, this running stitch marat has also been used decoratively on quilts and embroidery. Its look, white cotton thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth, is distinct and known the world over for its function. Up There and Saucony have brought this historic marat to their latest collab, and it’s launching globally tomorrow.
Fresh off the Australian release, Up There will have a limited restock for those in Australia tomorrow. Beginning February 23, select Saucony accounts worldwide will stock this leather and sashiko sneaker; the shoe flaunts debossed tongue Speed, supple leather insoles, and silver-tipped waxed cotton laces. The shoe rides atop sawtoothed gum bottoms.
The Up There x Saucony Grid 8000 ‘Sashiko’ releases tomorrow for $230 AUD (approx. $180 USD). Overseas boutiques like Hanon will be stocking the sneaker, but check Saucony retailers and local boutiques for availability.
