Airbnb's Tokyo Office Fuses Traditional Japanese Elements with Modern Design
Take a tour of the company’s newest branch.
The world’s most extensive accommodation-sharing service, Airbnb, has just opened its newest office in Tokyo. Located in the district of Shinjuku, the 500-square meter work space is designed by Japan’s Suppose Design Office. Based on interviews with Airbnb’s employees, the design firm came up with the initial program and floor plan. Boasting a double-height atrium which allows natural light to shine through the windows, the office incorporates elements of Tokyo’s cityscape and traditional Japanese architecture. For instance, the space features an engawa, which is an elevated platform with tatami mats where employees can sit down comfortably to enjoy the view of the building’s surroundings. In addition, the phone booths in the office are crafted from local white oak and rice paper film. Take a tour of the Airbnb Tokyo branch by browsing the gallery above.
