Instagram's New "Stories" Is Basically Just a Snapchat Copycat
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
Instagram introduces “Stories,” a new feature that allows users to share photos and videos that are visible for only 24 hours by their followers. If you’re thinking to yourself, “Gee, sounds an awful lot like Snapchat,” that’s because it pretty much is. Remember Facebook — which owns Instagram — attempted to acquire the spontaneous sharing platform in the past to no avail. Now, Facebook and Instagram have subscribed to the if-you-can’t-beat-em-join-em idea, launching a copycat version: tap and swipe through candid Stories that can be edited with text, drawing tools and emoji. Unlike with the edited content that already exists via feeds, Stories cannot be liked or receive comments, but people can be blocked from viewing at one’s disposal.
Instagram’s own CEO admits to the feature being a Snapchat original: “They deserve all the credit,” Amid receiving backlash for throwing a fan’s phone. “This isn’t about who invented something. This is about a format, and how you take it to a network and put your own spin on it.”
