Cj Hendry's Coloring Her Hyperrealistic World, 15 Colored Pencils at a Time
The artist talks drawing for Kanye West, consumerism as a subject and her Art Basel exhibit with Christian Louboutin.
It’s best not to take Cj Hendry too seriously. She pokes just as much fun at herself as she does at consumerism through her art. Even the holy grail of the Nike Air MAG, which she dipped into black paint, wasn’t safe. But it’s not only what she creates, it’s also how she creates it that has both our attention and the attention of the likes of Pharrell and Kanye West. Cj meticulously uses paper and pen to bring to life grandiose portrayals of pop culture objects and icons.
The Australian-born artist moved to New York two years ago before opening her first solo art show of black-and-white hyperrealistic drawings. We recently met Cj in her SoHo studio where she was working on her next big exhibit, another major milestone in her career. She was preparing for 2017 Art Basel in Hong Kong in collaboration with Christian Louboutin for “Complimentary Colors,” her first-ever foray into color. This time around, paint swatches were her subject matter — but she instead used 10-15 different shades of color pencils to create just one swatch.
