She’s the ‘Serious question: can we have this for breakfast’ that we all deserve.
To many, Charli XCX may be that pop star who’s really good at making addictive tunes and putting on crowd-pleasing performances. When she’s off-stage, however, the singer is just like any other 24-year-olds who’re trying to make sense of the world around them. Fans would know that back in 2015, Charli made a documentary entitled Number 1 Angel, in which she explores what feminism means in today’s world. Yes, she’s that serious about the topic. Even during our recent interview with her, we could tell from every answer she gave that she’s a firm believer of girl power.
“I think that female bonding in the industry is way more powerful and inspiring than female rivalry,” said Charli, who has collaborated with Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea and the like. “It’s just always fun to come together with girls and do stuff.” Her new mixtape Serious question: can we have this for breakfast, which features MØ and CupcakKe, is a perfect example of joined efforts between female artists. Speaking of how the project came about, Charli told us: “I’m somebody who’s in the studio every single day. I had these songs that myself and A. G. Cook have made, and I just wanted to put them out as a collection of work.”
Of course, we also asked her about her next studio album, to which Charli answered: ”It’s done for a long time. I’m just figuring out what the best time is to release it.” According to the singer, the record is “the most pop thing” she’s ever done, and one that she’s the most proud of. “It’s a lot about partying, but there’re also some emo, romance songs.” We’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.
In the meantime, watch above to see Charli answering fan questions on femininity, body shaming, her style icons and more.
