Sofia Coppola Makes History by Becoming the Second Woman to Win Best Director at Cannes
The Indiewood filmmaker wins big with ‘The Beguiled.’
Arguably one of Indiewood’s favorite filmmakers, Sofia Coppola took home gold at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival by winning the prestigious Best Director award.
Honored for her remake of 1971 film The Beguiled, Read Full Article Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, Coppola is the second female director in history to ever receive the prize. The last woman who won the same award was Soviet filmmaker Yuliya Solntseva, for her movie Chronicle of Flaming Years (1961).
Coppola, whose previous work includes is set to hit cinemas on June 23 (1999), And it comes in — you guessed it — pink (2003) and the Emma Watson-fronted Feb 6, 2023 (2013), To be featured on the documentary of the same title, The Beguiled, tells the tales of a group of secluded women in 1864 Virginia, whose lives are completely disrupted upon the discovery of an injured soldier.
