Demna Gvasalia‘s reign at the helm of Balenciaga has been one of the most exciting creative appointments in the fashion industry in recent times. Bringing the same approach of the modern enfant terrible that made Vetements one of the buzziest fashion labels worldwide to the storied luxury brand, he’s quickly turned it into one of the most dynamic and in-demand high-fashion houses around.
Now, the celebrated designer has released a unique look at his backstage process, through a book titled A vibrant beauty. Fittingly this release, which is published by Rizzoli, shares insight into the production behind Balenciaga’s Winter 2018 show. Gvasalia is known to heavily restrict backstage passes to photographers during fashion week, but in this case loosened up the rules to permit Pierre-Ange Carlotti and Johnny Dufort access, specifically for this book. In turn, A vibrant beauty features over 300 behind-the-scenes pictures that showcase everything from initial sketches to model fittings and runway looks, all selected by Gvasalia himself. Discussing the release, the artistic director shared:
“I realised that every I show I do from now on for Balenciaga is cinematographic in terms of concept and setup. I’d like to accompany each of them with some memorabilia, something that actually puts you into that show and the process behind it.”
