Serena Williams Lands 'InStyle's First-Ever "Badass Woman" Issue
The tennis star speaks about being unapologetic.
InStyle magazine has unveiled Serena Williams as the latest cover star of its first “Badass Woman” issue. The tennis champion has had a remarkable past nine months as a mother after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. last September. Back in March, after a 14-month-break, Williams went on to win her first match after having Alexis at the BNP Paribas Open. In the ensuing spread and cover shot by Robbie Fimmano Williams dons pieces by The Row, Gottex, Eric Javitz and more.
In the feature interview, Serena digs deep and talks about the first time she remembers being unapologetic:
“It took me a while because I’ve faced so much criticism, whether it was about my body or something else – it was always something. I always felt like I had to be softer or apologize, kind of indirectly, for who I am. And I don’t know when it happened, but something changed. I just became who I am and realized there’s nothing wrong with me. I understand who I am.”
Williams also spoke about what it was like to win the Australian Open while two months pregnant. She shared that she thought she was going to lose early on, but later felt herself getting more encouraged, especially towards the end.
This year, she launched the HBO documentary series, Being Serena and an Bella Hadid gives us a demo of the style trend. Head to InStyle magazine Share this article.
