UK Government Wants Netflix to Add Fiction Label to 'The Crown'

The latest backlash comes from UK culture secretary Oliver Dowden, who is calling on Netflix to add a disclaimer to the series clarifying that it is based on fiction. “‘Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact,” he told The Daily Mail. Dowden said he plans to write to Netflix with a formal request to add the disclaimer, which he characterized as a “health warning.”
Dowden’s concerns follow reports that the royal family is unhappy with the show’s fictionalized scenes, including one that suggests Prince Charles continued his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles during his marriage to Princess Di. Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, echoed Dowden’s recommendation for the addition of a fiction label: “It would help The Crown an enormous amount if at the beginning of each episode it stated that, ‘This isn’t true but is based around some real events.’ Because then everyone would understand it’s drama for drama’s sake,” he said.
