Now, the iconic French fashion house is giving fans a closer look at the making of the apparel and footwear collaboration, dubbed “Air Dior,” developed by Dior’s Kim Jones and Thibaut Denis, as well as Jordan Brand’s Vice President of Design Martin Lotti.
“Me and my friends used to share pairs because we couldn’t afford to buy a pair ourselves,” Jones says of his longstanding fascination with the AJ1. The Creative Director goes on to explain that Dior’s rendition of the basketball shoe pays homage to its original 1985 design — in fact, Footwear Director Denis and his team took apart an Air Jordan 2011 iD dispo ‘85 in “Neutral Gray” to replicate its construction as closely as possible.
Clips detailing the making of the sneaker reveal similarities to the painstakingly precise handbag-making process. Lotti reveals a Dior monogram hidden under the sockliner of both shoes, a testament to the level of design detail that has gone into the collaboration.
As for apparel, pieces including a navy suit, silk bomber jacket and co-branded necktie are all inspired by Michael Jordan‘s style, on and off the court. “Jordan always had that sophistication as well as that street edge,” Lotti explains.
