Judge Peter A. Cahill of Hennepin County District Court delivered the sentence with a preface specifying that neither emotion nor public opinion swayed his decision. “But at the same time, I want to acknowledge the deep and tremendous pain that all of the families are feeling, especially the Floyd family,” Cahill said.
Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, made a virtual appearance at the hearing. “I want to play with him,” Gianna said in brief video played in court. Philonaise, Floyd’s brother, also spoke. “I haven’t had a real night’s sleep because of the nightmares I constantly have hearing my brother beg and plead for his life over and over again,” he stated.
