Take a First Look at the Air Max 1 "Wabi-Sabi"
Featuring a midsole inspired by kintsugi pottery.
Since 2014, Nike has celebrated Air Max Day with special anniversary editions of the silhouette. With March 26 just around the corner, the Swoosh has begun teasing releases, including a new “Wabi-Sabi” colorway.
Modeled by choreographer and musical artist Rie Hata, the Air Max 1 “Wabi-Sabi” channels the Japanese principle of the same name. Wabi-Sabi encompasses ideas of embracing imperfections and finding beauty in flaws.
The sneaker’s midsole most illustrates this concept, with a cracked texture that mimics Japanese pottery repaired by kintsugi, the art of sealing cracks with gold lacquer to celebrate and emphasize their defects.
Earth tones cover the upper with off-white topstitching throughout. “XXXV” brodat on the lateral heel as a call out to the silhouette’s 35th-anniversary while “3.26” lands on the tongue tag to honor Air Max Day.
