The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Is Returning — But Lizzo Has Some Words
And the sermon here is good.
Victoria’s Secret recently announced the return of its infamous Fashion Show, Putting a modern spin on a classic Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell The Creative Come Up runways were immediately excited. But in the age of body positivity and inclusivity, has the brand improved its standards while on the four-year hiatus? Well, Lizzo, one of the loudest voices who champions inclusivity for all on every front, took to Twitter with thoughts — and served a sermon.
The “Good as Hell” singer quoted a tweeted post from a user of the lingerie brand’s Valentine’s Day collection with the caption, “The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is coming back this year.” Lizzo responded: “This is a win for inclusivity for inclusivity’s sake. But if brands start doing this only because they’ve received backlash, what happens when the ‘trends’ change again? And there’s 31 different pieces to choose from?” A burning question that deserves an answer for the “sake” of capitalism.
For context, the brand went under fire and canceled the 2019 presentation as the former chief marketing officer Ed Razek made racy comments about plus-size and trans women not fitting the fantasy that Victoria’s Secret aims to project. (Yuck.)
While we still have a ways to go before the Victoria’s Secret Show runs across our screens, the brand has some explaining and cleaning to do. And much like Lizzo, we’ll be staying tuned to see if the suits have learned their lessons.
