Mayuka Yamamoto's "Animal Boys" Take Over Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles
In a new series exploring the notion of ephemeral existence.
Mayuka Yamamoto’s irreverent children with animal features and enigmatic expressions are soon to take over Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. Serving as the Japanese oil painter’s fourth solo at the space, following “Monochrome, Apples and Animals” (2021), “Animal Crossing” (2020) and “Animal Boys” (2019), this new series explores the notion of ephemeral existence.
Yamamoto shared in her exhibition notes: “I created these new works hoping to express that ‘Something’ certainly exists. I’ve visited many catacombs throughout Italy and France, and while doing so, I remember initially feeling I was searching for something but didn’t know what.”
With each silhouette named after a different Playboy bunny Japan’s leading second-generation contemporary artists, Yamamoto’s figures often deliver a reticent and introspective feel. Her child characters, or “Animal boys” as she refers to them, are meant to be a mystery to the viewer, one that exudes an aura of otherworldly calm and demeanor.
“Ephemeral Existence” by Mayuka Yamamoto is a free-of-charge exhibition opening at the Main Gallery at CHG on April 22 until May 27.
