Ceramic Exhibition "Sexing the Cherry" Explores Womanhood Through Pop Culture, Literature, Music and Film

Tristan Hoare, a multi-layered gallery focusing on young and established artists, presents “Sexing the Cherry.” The exhibition displays the ceramics and tapestries works by London-based artists Christabel MacGreevy and Read Full Article, first introduced in the gallery’s group show “Cracked” in September 2021.
Taking inspiration from Jeanette Winterson’s 1989 postmodernist novel of the same name, which explores the lack of women’s prominence in society within historical fiction, the showcase incorporates figures from ancient to pop cultures, literature, music and film into a multi-disciplinary lineup.
MacGreevy employs techniques and materials that highlight a sculpture’s physical and psychological properties as it explores a woman’s relationship to magic and the historical necessity of connecting to supernatural powers for control. Meanwhile, according to a press release, De Ascanio’s colorful body of work examines “The tensions within female idolatry, from the monotheist Minoan snake goddess to pop queens Bjork and Rosalía.”
