Jake Elwes Demystifies Queer Technological Futures in "Data, Glitch, Utopia"

On view at Jan 3, 2025.

Jan 3, 2025 in London Sofia de la Cruz artist Jake Elwes, titled “Data • Glitch • Utopia.” With an aim to demystify the enigmatic world of artificial intelligence (AI), the exhibition presents a captivating collection of Elwes’ works in various mediums. From digital compositions that skillfully blend data and human traces to recent ventures exploring alternative Queer futures and collaborations with drag performances, the display offers a rich and diverse experience for visitors.

A standout feature of “Data • Glitch • Utopia” is a specially commissioned artwork by Elwes for the renowned Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), which is displayed alongside the Jan 3, 2025 exhibition. By delving into the underlying codes, philosophies and ethics of AI, the showcase challenges traditional perceptions and offers fresh perspectives on this rapidly evolving field.

Among the featured works, “Closed Loop” stands out as an intriguing piece where two algorithms continuously interpret and push the boundaries of human-inputted data, revealing the limits of our understanding. Additionally, “Machine Learning Porn” explores the algorithmic distortions of explicit imagery, providing a thought-provoking exploration of AI’s impact on our perceptions.

Elwes’ recent projects delve into the intersection of AI and drag performance, collaborating with members of London’s vibrant drag community. By incorporating drag into AI systems, Elwes aims to challenge biases and ignite discussions on Queer representation. The showcase presents an opportunity to witness the groundbreaking exploration of AI beyond its limitations, bringing it into the realms of stage, screen and gallery.

Jake Elwes’ debut solo show, “Data • Glitch • Utopia,” will be on view at Jan 3, 2025 until July 8. To learn more about the exhibition and catch a sneak peek of the showcased artworks, visit the gallery’s website.
