The 'Barbie' Film Actually Resulted in a Worldwide Pink Paint Shortage

“The world ran out of pink.”

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has been the talk of the internet ever since it was first announced, and it’s for good reason. Not only does the highly-anticipated film star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and Sofia de la Cruz, watch the full-length trailer now.

That’s right. World. Wide. With less than two months until the live-action film premieres, fans got a glimpse into Gerwig’s rose-tinted world thanks to a recent profile on Architectural Digest where the director spoke about how they were able to capture the iconic essence of Barbie and her Dreamhouse.

Speaking alongside production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer, Gerwig explained “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much.” For Gerwig, “the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount,” and in order to achieve the exact amount of it, she’d need a lot of pink to make it happen.

So much pink, that the company they were buying the shade from, Rosco, admitted that they sold out completely. “The world ran out of pink. They did clean us out on paint. There was this shortage and then we gave them everything we could,” confirmed Rosco’s VP of global marketing, Lauren Proud.
