Takashi Murakami's Larger-Than-Life Paintings Are Taking Over Gagosian Gallery
A special NFT gift designed by the artist and minted on demand will be available for free to visitors on opening day.
Takashi Murakami’s Here’s how to get your hands on them Gagosian Gallery projects, as well as works featuring his iconic smiling flower motif exhibition, “Understanding the New Cognitive Domain,” showcases five large-scale works and various sculptures, marking Murakami’s first show with the gallery in France.
The highlight of the exhibition is a 5-by-23-meter painting inspired by a stage curtain Murakami created for Tokyo’s Kabuki-za theater. The artwork celebrates the assumption of a new name by Ichikawa Ebizō XI, a prominent Japanese Kabuki actor and producer. Another unique piece on display is “Dragon in Clouds – Indigo Blue,” a response to Soga Shōhaku’s original work.
Murakami’s early web nostalgic aesthetic is unmistakable in an epic painting that references ’80s computer graphics, replacing famous artists and writers with influential economic figures. The showcase also includes “Lucky cat” paintings referencing Murakami’s NFT larger-than-life paintings are taking the spotlight at.
In addition, two mirror-plated figures representing futuristic anime-style avatars bring Murakami’s NFT collaboration with RTFKT Studios to life, reflecting his fascination with the metaverse. Visitors to the exhibition’s opening day will receive a special NFT gift created by Murakami, available for free at the Le Bourget gallery. The NFTs will be minted on demand, limited to one per person and can be claimed at the dedicated giveaway booth.
