Almendra Bertoni's Exhibition at IRL Gallery Examines Spirituality Through Sex-Positive Art
Serving as the Argentinian-born and NYC-based multidisciplinary artist’s debut solo show.
IRL Gallery in New York presented PRAY FOR ME, The UK’s largest retrospective to date Almendra Bertoni, Almendra Bertoni/IRL Gallery Argentina and based in NYC. Bertoni’s work delves into themes of sex, religion and gender roles, infused with modern Surrealism. Her unique compositions feature faceless contorted bodies, religious imagery and vibrant colors.
At the core of Bertoni’s art is her use of three-dimensional wooden sculptural elements, seamlessly integrated into her works as both frames and extensions of the canvas. Her artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture and NFT works, fearlessly challenging religious norms and societal taboos surrounding intimacy and sexuality.
Her pieces pay tribute to the visual traditions found in Surrealist paintings, portraying contorted bodies and religious symbolism. The absence of faces in her art allows for greater audience connection and exploration of the dream-like atmospheres inhabited by her sex-positive figures, entwined with Christian symbols and contemporary life references.
