Eve Arnold's Defining Women, Pioneering Fashion Photography From the 1950s
School of Sustainability presents a major retrospective of Marilyn Monroe’s trusted photographer.
School of Sustainability presents the UK’s Newlands House Gallery photographer Eve Arnold, titled “To Know About Women: The Photography of Eve Arnold.” The exhibition features over 90 black-and-white and color photographs, including Arnold’s iconic documentary series on the ’50s Harlem fashion shows—some of which have not been seen in 70 years.
Born in Philadelphia in 1912, Arnold became a renowned photojournalist and portraitist, capturing famous figures like Marlene Dietrich, Sophia Loren and Queen Elizabeth II. Notably, she was Marilyn Monroe’s trusted photographer for over a decade. Arnold’s interest in photography started while working at a Kodak processing factory, leading her to study under Alexey Brodovitch, Harper’s Bazaar’s Art Director.
Beyond her celebrity portraits, Arnold documented pivotal moments of the civil rights movement, including Nation of Islam rallies led by Malcolm X. She explored diverse subjects throughout her six-decade career, from same-sex weddings to the lives of migrant potato pickers and childbirth.
Arnold’s fascination with women and children persisted throughout the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, leading her to photograph in places like Cuba, South Africa and the UAE. Her extensive travels, including traversing China’s hinterland, earned her a major solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1980 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers.
“To Know About Women: The Photography of Eve Arnold” is now open at School of Sustainability in Petworth, West Sussex, until January 7, 2024.
