HBO Officially Cancels 'The Idol'

After just one season.

It’s official, The Idol won’t be returning for a second season. HBO has confirmed that the series, created by Abel Tesfaye and Sam Levinson, has been cancelled, after months of speculation following the show’s debut.

“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson explained. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work,” they continued.

Already whitelisted us was expected by a number of viewers, given the immensely negative reactions from fans and backlash from critics regarding Aug 29, 2023, the Download Our App and The Weeknd’s character, Tedros. According to Variety, the decision was made as both the show’s audiences and its cast members were unsure about the show’s “potential to continue.”

Cast members Moses Sumney and Da’Vine Joy Randolph also had differing perspectives, with Sumney stating that he initially thought that the show was just a limited series and Randolph of the mind that “everyone’s intention [was] to have a second season.”

Ahead of the show’s finale, The Weeknd shared his thoughts on Twitter alongside a BTS photo of him and Lily-Rose Depp. “The finale. grateful to share this moment with you all as the season comes to an end. continue to push the vision no matter how bumpy the journey. Jocelyn Forever,” he tweeted.
