Magda Kirk's "Closer" Coats Beheaded Bodies in Cotton Candy
Exploring the psyches of her self-created protagonists.

Titled “CLOSER,” the exhibition will focus on the artist’s characters and follow them in a journey to self discovery. Experimenting with multiple layers of “visual obstruction,” the pieces see Kirk delving deep into the psyches of her self-created protagonists.
Comprising 10 large-sized artworks, the exhibition will include a selection of works on canvas alongside wall paintings and decorations that aim to elevate Kirk’s craft to a new level. Executed using Kirk’s signature airbrush technique, the new works offer a fresh take on the artist’s typical practise, showcasing partially-formed and beheaded nude bodies covered in tattoos and drenched in a fluorescent, cotton candy-like haze. Captured “engaged in empowering yet ironic activities,” the artist’s protagonists appear in brightly-colored hues of pink, orange, blue and green.
“I often get surprised by bodies. I think it’s a weird experience to have a body,” the artist explains, speaking about her inspiration. The new collection of works see Kirk continue her signature style of anonymous portraits, continuing to depict figures without any recognizable individual features. Aiming to create a boundary between “real and unreal,” Kirk has become known for creating subjective depictions of ordinary people who seemingly struggle with their identity, self-esteem and self-expression.
