Inspired by the P-51 Mustang fighter jet, the Air Jordan 5 took things to a new level for Jordan Brand when it launched in 1990. Designed by Tinker Hatfield once again, the kicks debuted during an All-Star game MJ played in and originally launched in four OG colourways: “Black/Metallic”, “White/Fire Red”, “Fire Red” and “Grape”. Since then, the kicks have remained a constant amongst the Jordan Brand lineup and have launched in hundreds of popular colourways.

About Jordan 5

Designed by the one and only Tinker Hatfield and easily one of the most memorable Air Jordan designs, the Air Jordan 5 is still a classic to this day and is favoured by sneakerheads around the world due to its aggressive looks. Allegedly inspired by American WWII fighter planes, the silhouette first burst onto the scene back in 1990, launching in four OG colourways that have all gone on to become classics in their own right. The AJ5s release was accompanied with plenty of top-level marketing from Nike and Jordan Brand, with Michael frequently seen sporting different variants of the kicks on the court. 

Still a regular silhouette used across Jordan Brand’s seasonal Utility, the Air Jordan 5 doesn’t quite hold the same cult status as say the AJ4 or the AJ1, however it’s easily just as important in our eyes and should be a mainstay amongst the collections of any serious sneakerhead. We’ve seen various high-level collaborations in recent years that have used the AJ5 as the air canvas, so perhaps a revival is due soon.
