As a competitive swimmer and experienced designer, Clements has witnessed the human body pushed to its limits, an experience she now seeks to portray through her art. Her upcoming exhibition, titled “All I Want Is Three Heads,” at MAMA in London, explores the concept of bodily endurance, highlighting not just the experience of pain, but more importantly, the resilience and strength of the human body in the face of adversity.
Clements’s artwork delves into the autobiographical realm, exploring the embodied experience of womanhood as a performative and metaphorical exploration of the broader human condition. Through her work, she presents the body and its limbs as expressive vehicles. Aslant and stretched imagery pushes the boundaries of the body, reflecting its fragility while also conveying perseverance and an unwavering affirmation of existence.
Self-portraiture plays a pivotal role in Clements’s exhibition, revealing both concealed and unveiled aspects of the subject. Unlike traditional portraiture, which often focuses on truth, illusion or vanity, Clements sees the mirror as a tool for comprehending the weight and chaos of life imprinted on the human form.
